Abstract
Six Holstein steers, approximately 157 kg each, were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square arrangement of the following treatments: 1) control diet of concentrate and corn silage fed separately, 2) complete diet of concentrate and corn silage mixed prior to feeding, and 3) complete ensiled diet of concentrate and green chopped corn mixed prior to ensiling. Ratio of forage to concentrate was approximately 60:40 (dry matter basis) for the three treatments. A digestion trial with total collection was conducted during the last 5 days of the 21-day feeding periods. Dry matter intake and body weight gain were similar between treatments. Digestibility of ether extract was higher in steers fed the complete ensiled diet. Intake of calcium was similar, however, steers fed the ensiled complete diet had lower apparent absorption and retention of calcium. Apparent absorption and retention of calcium (g/day) was 15.8, 15.5; 16.5, 16.2; and 11.4, 11.1 for the control, complete and complete ensiled diet, respectively. Intake of phosphorus was lower on the complete ensiled diet as was apparent absorption and retention. Apparent absorption and retention of phosphorus (g/day) was 9.7, 9.1; 10.5, 10.3; and 6.3, 5.4 for the control, complete, and complete ensiled diets.
