Abstract

Methionine hydroxy anaolog ({alpha}-hydroxy {Upsilon}-methylmercaptobutyrate-Ca or MHA) was evaluated as a dietary supplement for increasing digestibility and energy utilization of bird-resistant (BR) sorghum grain diets fed steers in metabolism and comparative slaughter feedlot trials. Levels of MHA fed were 0, 7 or 30 g per steer per day. TDN, ME and nitrogen balance values were slightly improved by MHA supplementation. NEm was enhanced slightly but NEg values of the diets were unaffected by MHA. Liveweight gains were not improved by MHA. Gains were more accurately predicted with NEm and NEg values than with the GE:ME system.
