Abstract
Six mature Shetland pony geldings were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square arrangement to determine the digestibility of fat and the digestible energy, metabolizable energy and net energy for gain of fat-supplemented diets in a balance trial. Corn oil was added at 15% (diet 2) and 30% (diet 3) additional calories of digestible energy to a maintenance diet of oats (diet 1). An open circuit respiration calorimetry system was used to determine heat production in order to calculate energy balance.
The addition of corn oil to the basal diet resulted in a significant (P<.01) increase in the digestibility of ether extract, but digestibilities of dry matter, energy and acid detergent fiber were not significantly affected. Digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) densities were increased, as expected, due to the addition of corn oil. Heat production was not significantly affected by the addition, therefore, energy balance was increased (P<.01) with the addition of corn oil to the basal diet.
Linear regressions of DE and ME intake on energy balance were calculated. For maintenance, DE and ME requirements (expressed as kcal/kg-75/day) were calculated to be 94.9 and 82.4, respectively. Efficiency of conversion of ME to body gain (net energy) was approximately 85%. Mean values for DE, ME and net energy (NE) for gain (expressed as kcal/g dry diet) for all diets were: 3.59, 3.38 and 2.86, respectively. Estimates of DE, ME and NE for gain (expressed as kcal/g of corn oil) were calcualted to be 8.8, 8.4 and 7.1.
