Abstract

The efficacy of monensin as a feed additive for feeder calves wintered on dry mature pasture was evaluated. Monensin, hand-fed in a dry grain supplement, was evaluated using 40 yearling Angus steers with two replicates per treatment. Steers fed 200 mg/head/day of monensin gained faster (P<.05) than steers that received no monensin, .64 vs .57 kg/head/day, respectively. Self-feeding of monensin was evaluated using liquid supplements. Forty-eight yearling Angus steers grazing winter pasture were fed a liquid supplement ad libitum. When monensin intake was 100 mg/head/day during the first 56 days of the trial, supplemented calves gained faster (P<.05) than nonsupplemented controls. However, monensin intake dropped to 50 mg/head/day or less during the last 56 days and gains were not different for the 112-day period.
