Abstract

Three hundred lambs were used in a growth trial to determine the effect of monensin at 5, 10, 20 and 30 ppm in the diet on growth and feed efficiency. Average daily gain was not affected. Monensin decreased feed consumption by 2 to 18% and improved feed efficiency by 7 to 11% when compared to controls. The effect of monensin on the energy metabolism of lambs was also studied by indirect respiration calorimetry. Energy losses in feces, urine and methane were decreased by 10 and 20 ppm monensin when compared to controls. Heat production was increased slightly, but the proportion of dietary energy retained was increased by monensin treatment. Monensin also increased the proportion of dietary nitrogen retained.
