Abstract
Swine plasma cholesterol levels increased within the first 2 days postpartum, remained elevated during suckling, and decreased to and remained at approximately 100 mg/dl after weaning until about 150 days postpartum. Diet, especially the high cholesterol content of sows' milk, may have been a major factor controlling the plasma levels in the older preweaned animals. The phospholipid levels followed a pattern similar to that for cholesterol with a postweaning value of about 90 mg/dl. Triglyceride levels increased abruptly after birth but declined during the late preweaning period. Plasma values after weaning generally ranged between 40 and 80 mg/dl. Although diet was probably a major influence, other factors apparently enter into the modulation of triglyceride levels.
