Abstract
The symposium speakers have done a thorough job of covering their assigned areas. This summary will serve principally as a vehicle for drawing some general conclusions.
It is apparent, from the comments made by almost all participants, that animal agriculturists today are operating in a world of many and complex government regulations. This is particularly true in the area of animal waste management. The Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration all have some say in how agricultural waste is to be handled and used. Practices at the farm level must fit within the framework of the regulations promulgated by these governmental agencies. Animal agriculturists can no longer take a "cavalier" attitude about the waste management techniques that they will use. While the Food and Drug Admnistration has not published regulations on recycling animal wastes as feed ingredients, it has announced that appropriate regulations will be forthcoming in the near future.
