Abstract

HALDANE WESLEY BEAN

Haldane Wesley Bean was a staff member of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture for 31 years prior to his retirement in 1969. He was born to William Howard and Imogene Bethards Bean at Blue Mound, Illinois, on March 12, 1901—one of 17 sons and daughters all born in the same farm house.

"Mr. Bean," as he was called by many people, attended the University of Illinois where he received a bachelor's degree in Agriculture in 1922. After farming for a year, he became a science teacher at the Blue Mound Community High School. He was named Superintendent in 1925. He spend summers in residence at the University of Illinois, receiving a master's degree in Education in 1932.

In 1938, Professor Bean was appointed an Assistant in Animal Husbandry. He served in that capacity until 1942 when he was appointed Assistant to the Dean. In 1950, he was named Assistant Dean and Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station.
