Abstract
Two systems for maintaining cow-calf herds were evaluated over a 2-year period. The herd receiving treatment 1 was pastured on Coastal bermudagrass overseeded with ryegrass and wintered on hay. The herd receiving treatment 2 was pastured on Coastal bermudagrass and wintered on hay plus cottonseed meal. Cows, replacement heifers and calves which were fed hay and grazed ryegrass from February until April had higher (P<.05) daily gains than animals fed hay and cottonseed meal. Animal gains and subsequent calving performance were similar for both groups of cattle during the rest of the year. Total annual cost of variable inputs per cow and replacement heifer was $108.20 and $103.34 the first year and $124.00 and $138.95 the second year for treatments 1 and 2 respectively. Total receipts per cow and replacement heifer were $160.37 and $146.07 the first year and $174.53 and $143.21 the second year for treatments 1 and 2 respectively. As a result, returns to capital, land, labor and management per cow were $52.17 and $42.73 the first year and $50.52 and $4.26 the second year for treatments 1 and 2 respectively.
