Effect of Zearalanol on Weaning Weight of Male Calves1

A. T. Ralston2

Oregon State University, Corvallis 97331

Abstract

A total of 454 male calves, assigned to four different trials during a 7-year period, were used to evaluate the effectiveness of zearalanol (6-[6, 10-dihydroxyundecyl] -ß-resorcylic acid-µ-lactone) to promote growth in castrated or intact nursing calves. Calves implanted with zearalanol at birth and again at 90 days produced gains equal to DES at weaning (205 days) and zearalanol implants did not reduce gains of intact males. In only 1 of 3 years was the performance of implanted early castrated calves equal to that of intact calves. Zearalanol was equally effective with either crossbred (Holstein x Hereford) or straightbred Hereford calves. Implants of zearalanol significantly reduced testicular weights and generally reduced masculinity.
