What Benefits and Hazards does International Program Involvement Pose for the Faculty Member and Department1 ,2,

Abstract

Some animal scientists will have the opportunity in the future to participate in international programs related to the Title XII Amendment to the 1975 Foreign Assistance Act. Animal Scientists and administrators are interested in the impact of international programs on professional careers and departmental strengths. A study of the efforts of 35 U. S. universities on 68 AID contract projects in 39 countries over a period of 15 years was summarized. Animal scientists were the most numerous which included 103 or 17% of the total. Sections of the paper include attitudes toward international programs, impact on the department from assignment of personnel, impact of contract assignments on professional careers, impact of returned faculty on departments and professional fields, impact of foreign graduate students on departments, differences among disciplines in department impact, and a departmental overview. It is anticipated that future Title XII activities may include overseas trips of from 2 to 4 weeks which would be more beneficial and less disruptive to domestic faculty activities than many past overseas assignments of from 6 months to 2 years.
