Abstract
Regressions of pelvic height on pelvic width, pelvic width on hip height, pelvic height on hip height and pelvic area on hip height were obtained from replacement heifers grown out under two management regimes. Those at Tifton were purebred Angus, Polled Herefords and 3/4 and 7/8 Simmentals bred to calve as 2-year-olds. Those at Reidsville were straightbred Angus, Polled Herefords and Santa Gertrudis grown out more slowly than those at Tifton and bred to calve first as 3-year-olds. Results indicated that the relationship between pelvic dimensions and between pelvic dimensions and hip height during the growth period were affected by breed of cattle and management regime. The relationship between pelvic width and pelvic height during the growth period was not as greatly affected by breed and management regime as the various relationships between pelvic dimensions and hip height. For a particular hip height, the taller breeds (Simmental and Santa Gertrudis) had smaller pelvic dimensions than the breeds of moderate height (Angus and Polled Hereford). From herds at Tifton and Reidsville, respectively, heritability estimates were: pelvic width, .18 and .22; pelvic height, .10 and .38 (P<.05); pelvic area, .04 and .24 (P<.05); height at hips, .54 (P<.01) and .75 (P<.01).
