Abstract

Growth patterns for pelvic width, height and area dimensions and height at hips, body weight and weight/height at hips ratios were plotted for beef females grown out under two management regimes. Those at Tifton were purebred Angus, purebred Polled Herefords and 3/4 and 7/8 Simmentals bred to calve as 2-year-olds. Those at Reidsville were straightbred Angus, Polled Herefords and Santa Gertrudis grown out more slowly than those at Tifton and bred to calve first as 3-year-olds. Pelvic and other measurements were obtained when the heifers averaged 9.3, 12.4, 15.6, 18.3, 21.5, 28.0 and 39.8 months of age. Growth patterns were different (P<.05) between locations and between breeds within location. Generally, the Polled Herefords exceeded the Angus for pelvic dimensions and height at hips at all ages at both locations. The Simmentals exceeded the Polled Herefords and Angus at Tifton and the Santa Gertrudis (except for Polled Herefords for pelvic width) exceeded Polled Herefords and Angus at Reidsville for pelvic dimensions and height at hips. Generally, the Angus and Polled Herefords at Tifton exceeded their respective breeds at Reidsville for pelvic dimensions and height at hips. Growth patterns showed a plateauing effect for pelvic dimensions at a later age than height at hips for those at Tifton but not for those at Reidsville since there was no general indication that a plateau had occurred for growth patterns at Reidsville.
