Abstract
History and Organization of the NAS-NRC
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed a Congressional Charter which established the National Academy of Sciences dedicated to the furtherance of science and its uses for the general welfare of the United States of America and its citizens. The Academy was established as a private, honorary organization and currently has a membership of about 1170 distinguished scientists and engineers elected on the basis of outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and technology. Contrary to the opinion held by a number of persons, the Academy is not a federal agency. It does, however, regularly examine and report on any subject of science and technology upon request by departments of the federal government and other organizations.
To enable the National Academy of Sciences to react to requests for information on scientific problems and study of scientific issues, the Academy established the National Research Council in 1916. Created as a working arm of the Academy, the National Research Council draws upon a very broad representation of scientists and engineers to help its activities.
