Donald M. Kinsman was born May 20, 1923, on a farm in Framingham, MA. World War II interrupted his college education while he served this country with highest distinction in the 4th Division of the U.S. Marine Corps. During the Marianas campaign, Kinsman was awarded the Purple Heart and a Presidential Citation.
Following the war Kinsman returned to the University of Massachusetts, where he received the B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry. Subsequently he received the M.S. Degree in Animal Breeding from the University of New Hampshire. Kinsman was an instructor at the University of Vermont for one year, before returning to the University of Massachusetts as an Assistant Professor, and Farm Manager in 1952. He then moved to the University of Connecticut as an Assistant Professor in 1956.
During 1959 and 1960, Kinsman pursued his graduate studies at Oklahoma State University, where he was a Science Teacher Fellow of the National Science Foundation.
