Abstract
Thirty male Yorkshire pigs, from six suckled litters, were killed in equal numbers at 0, 7, 14, 21 or 28 days of age. Blood glucose level increased by 32% in the first week of life but changed little thereafter; ß-hydroxybutyrate level peaked at 14 days of age, which coincided with a decline in the rate of fat deposition. Daily rate of fat deposition exceeded that of protein from 7 days of age onwards. Between 0 and 28 days backfat increased 30-fold, while its lipid concentration increased from 8.7 to 77.5%. The lipid concentration of liver showed no significant change, while that of muscle peaked at 7 days of age. Fatty acid composition of the different tissues was similar at birth but significant changes occurred during the first week; backfat in particular changed towards the fatty acid composition of sows' milk.
