Abstract
A cannula design and surgical procedure were developed to equip wethers with double reentrant cannulae in either the jejunum or the ileum. Pre-operative fasting of not more than 24 hr, administering an electrolyte solution during the operation and a post-operative diet of high roughage increased the success and life of the preparation. Physical form of the ration fed after cannulation influenced the number of times blockage of digesta flow occurred in the cannula. Absorption characteristics of the 1 m segment of the intestine isolated by the four cannulae were measured by perfusion procedures employing mixtures of three amino acids at concentrations of .6 to 7.4 millimolar. Absorption measurements remained constant for over 6 months. Wethers consumed diets offered and appeared healthy for over 9 months.
