Abstract
Data collected through the West Virginia Beef Cattle Performance Testing Program over an 11-year period were analyzed to determine the effects of age of dam, sex, season of birth and age of calf on the weaning weights and grades of Hereford and Angus beef calves. Multiplicative correction factors were developed to adjust weaning weights for these environmental influences and were compared to two other sets of correction factors.
All effects on weaning weight and grade, except season of birth, were highly significant (P<.01) in both breeds. Season of birth was not significant in the Hereford calves but was in the Angus (P<.05). Correction factors developed in this study for sex agreed closely with other factors used in the comparison. Correction factors developed in the present study for age of dam effects were similar to the other two sets of correction factors used in the comparison for the middle age group cows. For cows in the younger and older age groups, there were notable differences among the three sets of correction factors compared.
