Extending our Commitments: a Challenge to U.S. Agricultural Universities¹

Abstract

President King, Dean Pound, Ladies and Gentlemen.

An invitation to address the opening session of die American Society of Animal Science is an honor in itself, but the honor is made even greater when one has been a member of the Society for nearly 30 years, and when that membership has brought rich rewards both personally and professionally. I am pleased, too, Mr. President, to appear before the Society on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, which has earned an international reputation for its agricultural research and for the achievements of its graduates.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ha a distinguished record of achievement, and its long history of service to the farmers and rural people of Wisconsin has made it possible for the University to say that its campus extends to the borders of the state.

It was suggested to me that my remarks today be directed toward new commitments for American colleges of agriculture in the broad area of internationally oriented programs.
