Abstract

AIBS held its 1976 annual meeting on the campus of Tulane University in New Orleans from May 30 through June 4 with more than 4,000 scientists in attendance. Two anniversaries were celebrated — the 25th anniversary of the Council of Biology Editors and the 50th anniversary of Biology, the major abstracting and service agency supporting biology.

As a member of the AIBS Public Responsibilities Committee, I was asked to present to the Public Responsibility Representatives how A.S.A.S. handles its public responsibility functions. I pointed out that A.S.A.S. has no one individual or committee specifically assigned this responsibility. However, there are several committees that share this responsibility. The major ones being the Committee on Information and Public Relations and the Regulatory Agencies Committee. I outlined the major responsibilities of these two committees. Other committees that have some activities related to public responsibility include the Carcass Evaluation Committee, Committee on Future Needs for Animal Science Graduates, Committee on Information Storage and Retrieval, Placement Committee, Committee on Professional Training Status and Standards and the Research Committee.
