Ram Semen Prostaglandin Concentration and its Effect on Fertility>

V. Dimov and G Georgiev1

Institute of Animal Science, 2232 Kostinbrod, Bulgaria

Abstract

The prostaglandins (PGs) have been isolated through an acid-ether extraction of ram seminal plasma and thin layer chromatography. The concentration of PGs was analyzed spectrophotometrically

A significant increase in the amount of PGE (E1, E2 and E3) was found at the height of the breeding period due to the increased sexual activity of rams. No changes in the concentration of PGA (A1 and A2) and PGB (B1 and B2) were observed. There was no correlation between the concentration of prostaglandins and the volume of the ejaculates, number of or motility of spermatozoa.

The addition of PGE2 and PGF2{alpha} to the diluted ram semen in amounts comparable to the total amounts of PGs in one ejaculate increased the fertility of rams by more than 15%.

Footnotes

1 Our thanks are due to Dr. John Pike of Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo for supplying us with PGE2 and PGF2{alpha}, and to Dr. Krister Green from the Department of Medical Chem., Karolinska Institute, Stockholm for labelled PGE2. The technical assistance of Mrs. Ts. Dacheva and Mrs. Z. Dodova is also acknowledged
