Influence of Alkali Treatments of Corn Cobs on in Vitro Dry Matter Disappearance and Lamb Performance1

Abstract

Four trials were conducted to evaluate alkali chemicals for treating corn cobs. Trial 1 was conducted using the artifical rumen which indicated that NaOH could be replaced on an equimolar basis with KOH as a chemical treatment for ground corn cobs. Treating and ensiling ground corn cobs with 3% NaOH plus 1% Ca(OH)2 increased average daily gain, feed intake and feed efficiency over cobs treated with 4% NaOH in growing rations for lambs (145 g/day gain vs 118 g/day). The increased performance may have been the result of decreasing the amount of Na fed to the lambs in the ration. Ca(OH)2 appears quite economical as a partial replacement for NaOH for treating cobs as well as supplying supplemental Ca. Treating corn cobs with 4% NH4OH resulted in reduced consumption. Corn cobs treated with NH4OH did not ferment. Good animal performance resulted from feeding this material in combination with a fermented feed. Cobs treated with 4% NH4OH appeared to be equal in feeding value to 4% NaOH treated cobs.
