Abstract
Data from 19 tests involving 1,305 boars tested in the Georgia Swine Test Station were analyzed to evaluate the performance and change in performance of Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire boars during a 13-year period. The same diet was used for all tests.
Final age (age at which the boars reached 90.7 kg weight or 150 days of age, whichever was attained first) was lower (P<.01) for Durocs and Yorkshires than Hampshires. Durocs and Yorkshires gained faster (P<.01) than Hampshires. Durocs gained more efficiently (P<.01) than Yorkshires and Hampshires while Yorkshires gained more efficiently (P<.01) than Hampshires. Backfat thickness was less (P<.01) in Hampshires than Yorkshires and Durocs while Yorkshires had less (P<.01) backfat than Durocs. Higher initial weights were associated with higher (P<.01) daily gains, less efficient feed utilization and reduction (P<.01) in final age.
Analyses of time trends showed that backfat thickness was reduced (P<.01) by .116, .126 and .122 cm per year for Durocs, Hampshires and Yorkshires, respectively. During the 13-year period in all three breeds, feed efficiency was improved but daily gain decreased slightly.
