Abstract

Data collected during a 16-year period were utilized to study relationship between birth type and preweaning productivity of purebred Southdown ewes. An equal percentage of single- and twin-born ewes lambed; however, single-born ewes gave birth to .05 and .04 more lambs, reared .04 and .04 more lambs and weaned .4 lb (.18 kg) and .1 lb (.05 kg) more lamb per ewe exposed and per ewe lambing, respectively, than contemporary twin-born ewes, but these differences in favor of the single-born ewes were not significant. These results suggest no apparent advantage in preweaning productivity for twin-born Southdown ewes over their single-born contemporaries when ewes of both birth types are managed under the same environmental conditions.
