Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the growth response of cross-bred neonatal pigs to different dietary regimes. The feeding regimes were started after nursing 48 hr plus a 48-hr feeding of cow's milk in experiment 1 and a 24-hr feeding in experiment 2. The treatments consisted of a starter diet or a semi-liquid diet containing different ratios of a starter diet and cow's milk. The data on the weekly period gains, the total gains and the feed efficiency of the neonatal pig did not show any significant differences between treatments in either experiment. The pigs responded equally well to all dietary treatments. The total gains observed in experiment 2 were greater than those in experiment 1. These data suggest the practicality of feeding neonatal pigs an all-mash starter ration after they have received colostrum for 48 hr and cow's milk for 24 hours.
