Abstract

The effects of prostaglandin F2{alpha} (PGF2{alpha}) and of estradiol benzoate (E2B) on estrus and conception and on plasma LH, progesterone and estrogen concentrations were studied in 67 lactating beef cows. Prostaglandin F2{alpha} was infused into the uterus of lactating beef cows in two trials (1 mg in trial 1 and 2 mg in trial 2). Approximately half of the PGF2{alpha}-treated cows received 400 µg E2B intramuscularly 48 hr after the PGF2{alpha} a treatment.

The percentage of cows in estrus by 88 hr post-treatment and the average interval to estrus, respectively, by trials and treatments were: Trial 1, PGF2{alpha} alone, 47% and 65 ± 2 hr; PGF2{alpha} + E2B, 69% and 64 ± 1 hr; Trial 2, PGF2{alpha} alone, 87% and 65 ± 4 hr; PGF2{alpha} + E2B, 85% and 65 ± 1 hr. Over both trials the percentages pregnant of those bred by artificial insemination (AI) were: PGF2{alpha} alone, 61%; PGF2{alpha} + E2B, 73%, Sham-infused controls, 56% and untreated controls, 71%.
