Abstract
Five trials involving 124 sows were conducted to investigate the effect of lactation energy intake on sow and pig performance. A basal diet calculated to contain 1.38 Mcal digestible energy (DE) per pound (3.03 Mcal DE/kg) was fed ad libitum or at a level of 1 lb (.45 kg) per pig nursing per day during a 21-day lactation period.
Sows fed ad libitum consumed significantly more feed per pig nursing and more total feed during the 21-day lactation period. Sow weight change was also significantly different between treatments at 7, 14 and 21 days. Ad libitum fed sows maintained their weight while limited fed sows lost 28.4 lb (12.9 kg) during the lactation period. Number of pigs weaned, average pig weight and average litter weight were not significantly affected by lactation treatment.
