Influence of Feeding Rice Straw and Urea Supplement with Whole and Ground Corn on Feedlot Performance, Rate of Passage and Digestibility by Steers1

Abstract

A feedlot experiment with steers showed that feeding 20% rice straw did not improve concentrate intake, daily gain or carcass weight when whole shelled corn was fed but was beneficial when the corn was ground. This experiment further showed that feedlot performance was improved when steers were fed whole rather than ground corn as the entire diet. Urea supplementation improved the performance of cattle fed either corn ration. Three metabolism experiments were conducted with steers fed whole or ground shelled corn fed with or without rice straw. The addition of 20% rice straw decreased nutrient digestibility as well as the digestible energy content of the concentrate. This depression was more pronounced in nutritionally unbalanced rations. A comparison between whole and ground shelled corn fed with 20 or 60% rice straw showed that whole corn was more digestible than ground corn in the 20% and similarly digestible in the 60% rice straw rations.
