Feed Use in Beef Production: A Review

T. C. Byerly

Greenbelt, Maryland 20770

Abstract

Beef cattle consume more than three-fourths of the estimated roughage grazed from pasture and range. Use of concentrates in beef production more than doubled from 1950 to 1973. Beef production more than doubled. Feed obtained from grazing by all livestock increased more than 50% from 1950 to 1973. Grain fed grain-fattened cattle increased from about 6.5 million metric tons (MT) in 1950 to more than 35 million MT in 1973. Feed efficiency of beef production increased during the early 1950's but has apparently declined since 1956.
