Abstract

Eight cows, totally hysterectomized 9 to 13 days after estrus, were treated with either PGF2{alpha} or saline to determine if PGF2{alpha} is luteolytic in hysterectomized cows. PGF2{alpha} was injected intramuscularly between 29 and 50 days after the last prehysterectomy estrus in either a single 30 mg dose or a 24 hr split dose of 8 and 4 mg, and saline was injected at volumes and times consistent with PGF2{alpha} injections. Corpora lutea present at hysterectomy were marked with India ink for future identification at subsequent ovariectomy 5 to 7 days post-treatment.

PGF2{alpha}, but not saline, caused estrus 2 to 3 days post-treatment (P<.01) and reduced blood serum progesterone concentration from greater than 6 ng prior to treatment to less than 1.5 ng 1 to 5 days post-treatment (P<.01 days 1, 4 and 5 and P<.05 days 2 and 3 post-treatment).

Ovaries from PGF2{alpha}-treated cows, but not from saline-treated cows, showed evidence of recent ovulation and new corpus luteum development.
