Abstract
Dried distillers solubles (DDS) and dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) were added to in vitro fermentation flasks to determine their influence on cellulose digestion by equine cecal organisms. Both DDS and DDGS significantly (P < .01) stimulated cellulose digestion.
The influence of DDGS on cellulose digestion in vivo was investigated using 42-year-old cecal fistulated geldings in a 4 x 4 latin square trial. The horses received a basal oats-plus-chopped straw diet with treatment levels of DDGS of: 0, 5% and 10%. Treatment 4 also consisted of 10% with 1/2 of the DDGS included in the diet and 1/2 administered directly to the cecum via the fistula 4 hr after each feeding. Mean cellulose digestibilities were 27.6, 22.8, 27.2 and 32.4%, respectively, for the four treatments. This was a significant (P < .01) quadratic response and the cecally-administered DDGS significantly (P < .05) stimulated cellulose digestion over treatment three. Similar trends were found for dry matter and gross energy digestion, but the effects were not significant.
