Anthelmintic Activity of Levamisole against Ascaris, Trichuris and Metastrongylus Infection in Swine1

D. L. Ferguson2 and R. G. White3

University of Nebraska, Lincoln 68503

Abstract

Two groups of five pigs, naturally infected with Ascaris suum and Trichuris suis and experimentally infected with Metastrongylus spp., were treated with levamisole at a rate of 8 mg per kilogram of body weight at 35 days post-infection with lungworm larvae. When administered in the feed, the anthelmintic efficacy was 99.6% for lungworms, and 100% for ascarids and whipworms. When levamisole was administered in the drinking water, efficacy was 99.5% for lungworms, 91% for whipworms, and 100% for ascarids. These counts were compared with one group of four infected, untreated controls on the basis of post-mortem worm counts.
