Abstract
The feeding value of whole and rolled propionic acid-treated high-moisture corn (PA-HM corn) was evaluated in growing rations for beef cattle. Rolling PA-HM corn improved daily gains (P <.05) and digestibility (N.S.). After rolling, PA-HM corn can be substituted for rolled barley on a weight for weight dry matter basis in growing rations for beef cattle. Similar amounts of corn were voided by both 10- and 20-months-old steers when whole PA-HM corn was fed.
Barley straw ad libitum provided about 45% of the total metabolizable energy requirements for beef cattle gaining about .5 kg per day, and may therefore make a valuable contribution on low to medium planes of nutrition.
