Prevention of Estrogen-Induced Regression of Corpora Lutea in Ewes by Hysterectomy

Abstract

Three trials were conducted in which 114 ewes were used in an attempt to produce luteal regression with exogenous estrogens in hysterectomized ewes. Estrus was day 0. In the first trial, ewes were either hysterectomized or laparotomized on day 9, injected intramuscularly with corn oil or with 1 or 10 mg of estradiol (E2) in corn oil on days 9 and 10 and killed on day 14. In intact ewes, both the 1 and 10 mg dose of E2 reduced CL weight. However, in hysterectomized ewes, neither dose reduced CL weight and thus indicated that not even a pharmacologic level of E2 was lytic in hysterectomized ewes.

In the second trial, 1 mg of either E2, estrone (E1), or diethylstilbesterol (DES) was injected daily from day 9 through 13. The ewes were killed on day 14. Again, all three estrogens reduced the weight and progesterone content of CL from intact ewes, but none reduced CL weight or CL progesterone from hysterectomized ewes.
