Abstract

FREDRIC NEWELL Owens was born in Baldwin, Winsconsin, on September 1, 1941. He recieved his B.S. degree in 1964 from the University of Minnesota with distinction. He was awarded the Ralston Purina Graduate Fellowship in 1966 and 1967 while completing his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Animal Science Department at the University of Illinois in 1968.

Dr. Owens' creativity and professionalism at the University of Illinois have been reflected by innovative research with the functional ruminant, yielding interpretable data in controversial areas under critical analysis. His unique and creative approach has involved surgical preparation on the experimental animal, and sampling techniques for measuring flow rates and estimating the effect of micro biota on postruminal composition of digesta. He has estimated the amino acid requirement of the ruminant by studying the oxidation rate of labeled exogenous amino acids administered in different quantities and correlating then with plasma amino acid levels.
