Abstract
In two of three studies, feeding or rumen infusion of isobutyric and/or isovaleric acids or feeding casein to lambs on high roughage, urea supplemented rations improved nitrogen retention and decreased urinary nitrogen loss. Neither rumen ammonia nor blood urea concentrations were affected by the acids. Rumen branched-chain volatile fatty acid (BVFA) concentrations were higher in lambs supplemented with soybean meal, casein or BVFA than lambs supplemented with urea alone. The acids did not affect (P > .05) dry matter or protein digestibility.
