Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the effects of age of the boar on testicular tissue lipids, phospholipids and fatty acids. Twenty-five boars ranging in age from birth to 24 months were utilized in the study. Total lipid of the testicular tissue declined from 43.8 mg/g at 1.5 months of age to 32.4 mg/g at 24 months of age (P> .05). Phospholipid represented from 45 to 63% of the total lipid. Phospholipids such as choline phosphatide, serine phosphatide and inositol phosphatide did not change with age, but ethanolamine phosphatide and sphingornyelin varied significantly among age groups. The testicular tissue phospholipid of fatty acids were widely variable with age and were predominantly saturated, while polyunsaturated fatty acids represented only a small part of the total testicular tissue phospholipid fatty acids. This was in contrast to a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in boar spermatozoa.
