Value of Alfalfa Meal and Wheat Bran in Diets for Swine During Prefarrowing and Lactation

Abstract

One-hundred-eighty-seven pregnant gilts were used in an experiment designed to evaluate the efficacy of adding 5% dehydrated alfalfa meal or 5% wheat bran, or both, to a standard 16% protein corn-soybean meal lactation diet. Experimental diets were fed at 4.2 lb./day (1.9 kg/day) from day 109 of gestation until farrowing and ad libitum during a 28-day lactation. No criterion of reproductive performance was significantly (P < .05) affected by dietary treatment. An average of 10.2 pigs per litter (8.9 live) were farrowed, and 7.3 pigs per litter were weaned at 28 days.
