Secretion Rates and Chemical Composition of Oviduct and Uterine Fluids in Sows

Abstract

Oviduct and uterine fluids were collected by cannulation for 10 to 17 days from five Landrace sows. Secretion rates of oviduct and uterine fluids during estrus were 5.1 ± 2.2 and 6.9 ± 3.5 ml/24 hr., respectively; these values were significantly higher than those found for diestrus (2.1 ± 0.9 and 2.9 ± 1.7 ml/24 hr.; P< .01).

Concentrations of both dry matter and protein were significantly higher in uterine fluid than in oviduct fluid (P< .01). Concentrations of nonprotein nitrogen, glucose and lactic acid did not vary with the periods of estrous cycle and the kinds of fluids. Uterine fluid collected during estrus contained about four times more total lipid than oviduct fluid collected during the same period. Choline diesterase activity of uterine fluid was about three times higher than oviduct fluid, and it was significantly higher in estrous fluids than in diestrous fluids.

Concentrations of sodium, chloride, calcium, potassium, magnesium and total phosphorus were 314.8 ± 24.2, 381.4 ± 47.2, 10.6 ± 4.2, 48.6 ± 9.6, 0.6 ± 0.2 and 5.2 ± 0.9 mg/100 ml of oviduct fluid, and 255.1 ± 33.8, 417.8 ± 50.1, 12.1 ± 5.4, 61.6 ± 18.4, 0.7 ± 0.2 and 8.8 ± 0.6 mg/100 ml of uterine fluid, respectively.
