Abstract

A total of 145 pigs from 1 to 6 weeks of age were used in two experiments to determine the effect of an acetic acid nasal irritant and dietary calcium on turbinate morphology. Nasal irritation induced by a 1 ml intranasal instillation of dilute acetic acid was effective in producing turbinate deformity and rhinitis. Growth retardation was associated with turbinate deformity in pigs instilled at 1 or 2 weeks of age. Growth retardation was not present in pigs instilled at 5 weeks of age.

Histological observations of the turbinate bone and internasal suture revealed that generalized osteopenia was produced from deficient dietary calcium, but diet had no effect on turbinate deformity or rhinitis. High calcium diets were not effective in preventing turbinate deformity and rhinitis in acetic acid-instilled pigs. It was apparent that two separate mechanisms affected pathological turbinate morphology: a) a generalized phenomenon that was produced by deficient dietary calcium resulted in osteopenia of the turbinate and other bones; and b) a localized phenomenon induced by nasal irritation resulted in turbinate deformity and rhinitis.
