Abstract
The effect of prostaglandin F2
(PGF2
) on luteal function was studied in a total of 13 gilts. As an initial treatment 2 or 5 mg of PGF2
was injected into the uterus of each gilt at laparotomy on day 10 of the estrous cycle. A jugular cannula was surgically implanted at the same surgery to allow collection of peripheral blood for hormone analysis. A second trial was conducted in a similar manner except that PGP2
was given intramuscularly on day 12 of the estrous cycle. Gilts returning to estrus were bred to investigate the effects of PGF2
on luteal function in pregnant gilts. Treatment consisted of a single intramuscular injection of 5 mg of PGF2
between days 25 and 30 of gestation.
The administration of PGF2
on day 10 or day 12 of the estrous cycle had no significant effect on luteal function as measured by levels of plasma progesterone and the interval to estrus following treatment. PGF2
given during early gestation significantly (P< .05) decreased plasma progesterone levels and resulted in abortion in four of seven gilts.
The results of this study show that PGFZa was not luteolytic during the estrous cycle at the dosages up to 5 mg per animal but did appear to cause luteolysis at the same dose level when given during early pregnancy.
