Metabolizable Energy Value of Corn Gluten Feed

J. T. Yen, J. D. Brooks and A. H. Jensen

Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station, Urbana 618011

Abstract

Ten barrows averaging 17 kg in weight were used to determine the metabolizable energy value (ME) of Corn Gluten Feed (CGF). The one source of CGF was divided into two parts, one of which was pelleted and granulated. Each CGF portion was either added (20%) to the fortified cornstarch-soybean meal basal diet, or replaced an equal amount of cornstarch. Five-day collection periods were used. Estimated ME values of CGF were not significantly affected by pelleting or by method of incorporation into the basal diet. The estimated ME value for CGF was 2.77 kcal/g of dry matter. After adjustment for nitrogen retained the value was 2.60.
