Abstract

NAS - NRC and ARI

Restructuring of the National Research Council, the working, program arm of the Academy, is essentially completed. The new Assembly of Life Sciences includes a Division of Biological Sciences, formerly the Division of Biology and Agriculture. The Board on Agriculture and Renewable Resources, formerly the Agriculture Board, is a major component of the new Commission on Natural Resources. Representation of professional societies is under consideration. The Assembly of Life Sciences will attempt to maintain, and hopefully enhance, its relationship to the professional societies.

The Agricultural Research Institute held its 22nd Annual Meeting, the first under its new entity as a corporation, October 16 to 17, 1973. The theme, "Guiding Agricultural Changes," featured discussions on world trade, the energy crisis, farm policy and the consumer, U. S. agriculture-now and in the future, and implications of change in agricultural research programs. As a corporation, the Institute is independent of the National Research Council, but will continue association with the Board on Agriculture and Renewable Resources. F. Sierk
