Approach to Hormones as Drugs for Animals—Relationship to Delaney Amendment

R. G. Zimbelman

The Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49001

Abstract

We believe that improved efficiency of food producing animals through the judicious use of physiologically effective agents is in the best interests of our society. Society as a whole should judge the benefit-risk ratio it is willing to assume. We believe that our knowledge allows us to learn enough about any hormone proposed for use in animals that any risk will be exceedingly small. Many proposed substances will fail our proposed tests, but not all should fail only because they are physiologically active.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who disagrees or agrees with my evaluation of this highly controversial matter. I would hope that our discussion could be objective, after all, we all have a stake in the resolution of this matter as soon as possible. Let's hope that the resolution of this matter takes into account the best scientific data and thinking available.
