Iron, Zinc and Copper in Mare's Milk1

Abstract

Milk samples from three Arabian and seven Quarter Horse mares were obtained by manual expression of the contents of one mammary gland into acid-washed Pyrex beakers. The first sample (partum) was obtained 15 to 30 min. after parturition and before first nursing of the the foal. The respective milk concentrations (µg/g) of iron, zinc and copper at the designated sampling periods were as follows: partum 1.31, 6.43 and 0.99; 12 hr. 0.95, 2.83 and 0.83; 24 hr. 1.05, 3.65 and 0.73; 48 hr. 0.86, 3.73 and 0.66; 5 days 0.88, 3.46 and 0.44; 8 days 0.88, 3.29 and 0.44; 3 weeks 0.83, 2.81 and 0.29; 5 weeks 0.71, 2.24 and 0.25; 2 months 0.61, 2.06 and 0.23; 3 months 0.55, 2.15 and 0.25; 4 months 0.49, 2.44 and 0.20.
