A Comparison of In Vivo and In Vitro Metabolizable Energy of Triticale for the Chick, Rat and Pig1

Abstract

Metabolizable energy (M.E.) values of three lines of triticale were determined with chicks, rats and pigs and compared with that of corn. M.E. values for triticale were lower than those for corn in all species tested despite the fact that the gross energy values of the triticale and corn were nearly equal. Gain and feed efficiency of chicks fed two of the triticale lines were superior to those fed corn. Gain of rats fed a third line was inferior to ones fed corn. In vitro estimates of M.E. were in close agreement to those determined in vivo with chicks and rats which confirms the suitability of the method to estimate metabolizable energy values of cereal grains.
