Abstract
Thirty-three pigs were used to estimate the ferrokinetics of 59Fe and determine the relationships of transferrin and ceruloplasmin to ferrokinetics. Pigs were studied at birth, 30 to 36 and 78 to 84 hr. after the first nursing. At 3 days of age, pigs were divided into oral iron - supplemented (six pigs) and unsupplemented (six pigs) groups. Pigs from each group were studied at 10 days of age. Erythropoiesis in the newborn pigs was extensive, but hypoceruloplasminemia and hypotransferrinemia were observed in this stage. Nonheme iron mobilization from the liver was not observed during the neonatal period, despite active erythropoiesis in erythroid marrow. Prompt and steady increases in ceruloplasmin and transferrin were observed from a few days after the first nursing. This phenomenon coincided with nonheme iron release from the liver. Following the exhaustion of the storage iron, iron deficient anemia developed. Thus, the plasma iron clearance was increased and the synthesis activity for hemoglobin in erythroid marrow was accelerated still more. In comparison, with iron supplementation, plasma iron clearance was markedly delayed, and the incorporation of radioiron into the liver was considerably increased. However, iron admin- istration did not affect 59Fe incorporation into circulating red cells for 24 hr. after the injection of 59 Felabelled plasma.
