Pattern of Luteinizing Hormone Release in Progestintreated Ewes1

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted with yearling ewes to study the pattern of release of LH at the first and second estrous periods following progestin treatment and the effect of dose of progestin on the time of LH release at the first post-treatment estrus.

In experiment 1, data were obtained at first and second post-treatment estrus on 43 of 100 ewes which had been assigned at random to treatment during one of 4 months of the breeding season (September through December). Treatment consisted of an intravaginal sponge containing 20 mg flurogestone acetate (Cronolone) for a period of 13 days.

For experiment 2, 24 animals were assigned at random to each of two treatments. These ewes received intravaginal sponges containing either 20 or 40 mg flurogestone acetate for 13 days.

The results from experiment 1 showed a significant (P< 0.01) effect of month on the number of ewes showing estrus within 72 hr. post-treatment.
