Maternal Sib Correlations for Weaning Weight in Hereford Populations under Diverse Environments1

Abstract

Populations of Hereford cattle of common genetic origin were developed under two types of environments in Nevada. At one location (MSFL) herds were maintained on improved, irrigated pastures; progeny in the other environment (KCFL) were under range conditions. Maternal sib correlations, which represent repeatability, or the degree of association between records of two or more progeny of a particular cow, were computed from weights of 1488 calves produced by 240 MSFL dams and 139 KCFL dams during the period from 1955 to 1969. Average numbers of progeny per cow were 3.92 and 3.91, respectively, for the two locations.

Maternal sib correlations tended to be lower under the more favorable feeding conditions; however, the two estimates did not differ significantly. Estimated repeatability values were 0.33 ± .04 for the MSFL herds and 0.44 ± .05 at KCFL.
