Abstract
The piglet receives protection against (1) systemic diseases for the first 10 to 14 days of life from colostrum, (2) enteric diseases from the continuous ingestion of antibodies in milk and (3) it starts to produce its own antibodies at about 10 days of age. Each of these mechanisms of immunity is ideally suited to its role in the immunological control of infectious diseases and each is essential for the continuous and successful rearing of piglets.
